A DAY IN THE NIGHT OF AMERICA by Kevin Coyne (Henry Holt: $14.95; 316 pp.). An estimated 10 million Americans (“a number equal to the combined populations of Ireland, Israel and Nicaragua”) work at night. Coyne wandered from Boston to Alaska, watching and asking questions. He talked to people making doughnuts, cleaning offices, trading international currency, fishing for herring and patrolling the streets. His observations of this nocturnal world are interesting, but his writing lacks the flair needed to make the mundane seem extraordinary.
