BOYS’ TENNIS / 1994 PREVIEW : SIX TEAMS TO WATCH
Dana Hills
Coach: John Stephens (sixth year).
1993: 14-8, 7-3 in the South Coast League; lost to University in the second round of Division I playoffs.
Key returners: David Bailey, Jr., could play No. 2 or 3 singles or No. 1 doubles; Mike Baxi, Jr., could play singles or No. 1 or No. 2 doubles; Carlos Betancourt, Jr., will play No. 2 or No. 3 doubles; Hanley Ernst, Jr., ineligible last year, will play doubles this year; Erik Lundblad, Jr., should play No. 1 or No. 2 singles; Justin Rimel, Jr., will play doubles; Christian Spaulding, Sr., will play singles or No. 1 or No. 2 doubles.
Key newcomers: Brandon Fallon, Fr., ranked 15th in Southern California 14s, could battle Lundblad for No. 1 singles spot.
Outlook: Stephens’ lineup is fairly uncertain heading into the season. But the upside is that his team is blessed with plenty of talent. Stephens is especially excited about Fallon. “He’s coming in with the most talent as a freshman that I’ve had in a number of years,” Stephens said. It shouldn’t take Stephens long to find out about his team. University, Corona del Mar, Newport Harbor, Woodbridge and Punahou (top-ranked Hawaiian team) are on the nonleague schedule.
