COLLEGE BASKETBALL ROUNDUP : Arizona Gets Pay-Back, Pressing Washington

When Washington upset Arizona in February, the Huskies played close to a perfect game. They turned the ball over only 11 times.

Arizona had something to do with that and decided not to repeat its error Thursday.

The Wildcats pressed Washington all over the McKale Center in Tucson, generating 11 Husky turnovers in the first 9:09, 19 in the first half and 30 in the 95-62 Pacific 10 Conference victory.

Forward Ray Owes was one of the beneficiaries of that defensive intensity by eighth-ranked Arizona, scoring a career-high 25 points, many off steals and Washington mistakes.

Khalid Reeves had 28 points as the Wildcats (24-4, 13-3) won their seventh in a row since losing, 74-69, at Washington on Feb. 5. Reeves’ backcourt mate, Damon Stoudamire, scored only three points, 15 below his average, but had 11 assists and four steals.

Washington (5-19, 3-12) shot nearly 67% in the first half but was behind, 50-32.

“Turnovers killed us,” Husky Coach Bob Bender said. “Not only the number, but that they probably turned 60% of them into buckets. We can’t turn it over that many times at this level and have a legitimate chance of winning.”

No. 9 Purdue 86, No. 18 Minnesota 70--Glenn Robinson, the leading scorer in Division I, had 31 points at West Lafayette, Ind., where the Boilermakers kept their hopes for a Big Ten championship alive.

Robinson, who brought a 29.3 average into the game, added 12 rebounds in recording his 15th double-double of the season as Purdue (24-4, 12-4) moved within half a game of Michigan by beating Minnesota (19-10, 9-7) for the 12th consecutive time at home.

No. 12 Kansas 97, Iowa State 79--Richard Scott had a career-high 24 points to lead the Jayhawks, and Greg Ostertag broke Danny Manning’s school season record for blocked shots with 73.

Three seniors, Scott, Steve Woodberry and Patrick Richey, made their final shots at Lawrence, Kan., for the Jayhawks (23-6, 8-5) in the Big Eight game.

Fred Hoiberg had 24 points for Iowa State (13-12, 3-10), which has lost 28 of its last 30 games at Lawrence.

No. 20 California 82, Oregon 73--Jason Kidd surpassed the Pac-10 season record for assists and Lamond Murray scored 26 points for the Bears at Berkeley.

Kidd had five assists and has 249 this season, breaking the record of 247 set by Arizona’s Russell Brown in the 1978-79 season. Kidd also had 25 points for California (20-6, 11-4). Orlando Williams scored 22 for Oregon (6-18, 2-13).

No. 24 Alabama Birmingham 84, Dayton 53--Robert Shannon scored 29 points, including five three-pointers, for the Blazers (21-6, 7-4, who beat the Flyers (6-19, 1-11) in a Great Midwest game at Birmingham.

OTHER GAMES Dion Cross scored 16 points and Brent Williams and Darren Allaway each had 14 to lead Stanford (15-9, 8-7) to a 90-66 victory over Oregon State (6-18, 2-13) in a Pac-10 game at Stanford. . . . Fred Ferguson scored 21 points and grabbed 16 rebounds, and Nathan Erdmann added 20 points as Washington State (18-9, 8-7) won, 80-71, at Arizona State (13-12, 8-8). . . . Greg Brown scored 34 points and Marlow White added 22 as New Mexico (22-5, 14-3) claimed its first WAC championship since 1978 with an 84-82 overtime victory over Brigham Young (19-7, 13-4) at Provo, Utah. . . . James Dockery scored 19 points and grabbed 10 rebounds to lead New Mexico State (20-6, 12-5) to an 86-73 overtime victory over Pacific (16-12, 10-7), giving the Aggies the Big West Conference championship. . . . Ryan Hoover and Keith Kurowski combined for the final 11 points for Notre Dame (11-17) in a 66-64 victory over Loyola of Illinois (8-18) at Rosemont, Ill.
