Eileen Rankel; Developed AIDS Program
Eileen Rankel, 64, a Los Angeles school nurse who developed an AIDS education program in the school district while also working with young substance abusers during her 35-year career. After her retirement in 1989 she continued working with AIDS victims, counseling and treating more than 130 who eventually died. One of her prime activities was the Louise Hay Hayride, one of Los Angeles’ longest-running AIDS support groups. An Eileen Rankel AIDS Service Award was established in her honor. She was its first recipient. In Van Nuys on Sunday of cancer.
