BASKETBALL PLAYOFFS : Boys’ Playoffs

Fresno Bullard 80, Fremont 61--Calvin Patterson and Dion Champion each scored 12 points for Fremont Tuesday in a Southern California Regional quarterfinal game marred by postgame brawls and a power failure.

Fremont 6-foot-7 forward Louis Radford allegedly hit referee Pete Caldwell in the face, witnesses told Central Section Commissioner Merritt Gilbert.

Pathfinder assistant coach Mike Houston was accussed of hitting Bullard assistant athletic director Rick Browning, Bullard athletic director Jan Locker said.

Houston said that he went to assist Radford when he got in a shoving match with Browning. Police cited Houston for his alleged role in the brawl.

Browning was taken to St. Agnes Medical Center by ambulance after suffering facial cuts and neck injuries. He received several stiches above his left eye.

The game was halted with 8:07 left in the third quarter when the lights went out in the gym. Both teams were sent to the locker rooms for 15 minutes until power was restored.

Shannon Taylor scored 32 points to lead the Knights. Crenshaw 79, Huntington Beach Edison 45--Despite showing signs of fatigue, Crenshaw, the No. 5-ranked boys’ basketball team in the nation according to USA Today, blew out Huntington Beach Edison in the first round of the Southern California Division I Regionals Tuesday at Cal State Dominguez Hills.

Ronnie Arch led Crenshaw with 24 points, including six three-pointers, and Kristaan Johnson had 21. Tremaine Fowlkes, who was averaging 25.5 points and 15.8 rebounds, had five points and 14 rebounds.

Crenshaw used its bench more than at any time this season and rarely ran its full-court press.

“I don’t know what is wrong with the team,” Crenshaw Coach Willie West said. “They played tired, and they don’t have the sharpness that they usually have this time of the season.”

The Cougars got Edison to play its up-tempo style and forced five turnovers in the first three minutes. The Chargers made only three of 15 field goals and trailed, 18-6, after the first quarter.

Crenshaw maintained at least a 15-point lead through the second and third quarters and then outscored Edison, 28-11, in the fourth.

“I think the team was overanxious,” Edison Coach Larry Hirst said. “They had a good showing against Mater Dei and they thought another good showing and they would be competitive with Crenshaw.”

Micah Kroeger led Edison with 13 points, making seven of eight free throws. He was three of 15 from the field.

“We tried to run with them and we got burned,” Kroeger said. “To beat a team like Crenshaw, you have to be patient. You can’t play their up-tempo style.”
