World IN BRIEF : PAKISTAN : At Least 4 Killed in Karachi Protest
Opponents of the Pakistani government battled police and troops during a protest strike, pelting cars with stones and setting buses on fire. At least four people were killed. Karachi, a sprawling port city of about 10 million people, has been troubled by repeated confrontations between security forces and the Mohajir Qaumi Movement, a political party opposed to Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto’s government. Supporters of the movement waged gun battles with police and army troops in several parts of the city, security forces said. The strike shut down much of the city’s business, schools and transportation.
