Mark Paredes, football coach at Bishop Amat High for the past eight years, will become coach at J.W. North High in Riverside next season.

Paredes, 41, compiled an 84-14 record and led the Lancers to at least a share of eight consecutive league championships and the 1992 Southern Section Division I title.

Bishop Amat has not named a successor.

Teams from the West won the girls and boys West San Gabriel Valley All-Star Classic at La Canada High.

Liz Doud of Flintridge Sacred Heart scored 17 points and had 13 rebounds to lead the West to a 95-36 victory over the East. Sheila Reeves of San Gabriel led the East with 10 points.

In the boys’ game, Braden Weber of St. Francis scored 19 points and had 10 rebounds in a 121-86 West victory. JeCarl Riggins of Blair scored 21 points for the East.

COMMUNITY COLLEGES

Mt. San Antonio College will play host to the youth days portion of the annual Mt. SAC Relays on April 8-9.

The youth days, sponsored by the Amateur Athletic Foundation, will involve more than 4,000 children in grades three through nine. The instructional program provides training in track and field and concludes with competition. Participants receive awards, T-shirts and passes to the Mt. SAC Relays.

COLLEGES

Kevin Patterson, who coached the Cal Poly Pomona men’s basketball team for the past two seasons, has resigned.

Patterson compiled a record of 24-27 at Pomona after succeeding Dave Bollwinkel, who left to become an assistant at Dayton in 1992. Patterson served as an assistant on Bollwinkel’s staff for five years.

Pomona finished 12-13 and 7-7 in conference in 1993. This past season, the Broncos finished 12-14 and 3-9 in the CCAA.

No replacement has been named.

Jason Boswell of Turlock High and Matt Reed of Maranatha have signed letters of intent to play basketball next season at Azusa Pacific.

Boswell, a 6-foot-3 guard, averaged 20.8 points a game last season and led his team to a 20-9 record. He is the son of Chuck Boswell, who played at Azusa Pacific from 1965-69 and scored 2,090 points.

Reed, a 6-8 forward, averaged 13.9 points and 9.3 rebounds this past season and helped his team finish 17-7.

Cal Poly Pomona’s baseball team, ranked 24th in NCAA Division II, entered the week 21-10-1 and 5-1 in the California Collegiate Athletic Assn.

The Broncos play host to Cal Poly San Luis Obispo in a three-game CCAA series that begins Friday at Scolinos Field.

Last week, Pomona won three of five games at the Mesa State (Colo.) tournament in Grand Junction, Colo.

Senior designated hitter Dave Anderlik is batting .400 for Pomona. Senior catcher Brian Dennis is batting .393 with 34 RBIs. Junior outfielder Aaron Edwards has 28 stolen bases.

Azusa Pacific’s baseball team is in Hawaii this week on a seven-game trip.

The Cougars, 18-7 and 5-3 in the Golden State Athletic Conference, have been led junior first baseman Steve Lind, who is batting .415. Junior shortstop Jon Chaparro and junior outfielder Jeff Kuey are batting .397.

Senior Ruben Niebla is 6-0 with a 1.44 earned-run average in 56 1/3 innings.

Azusa Pacific resumes GSAC play April 9 at home against Southern California College.

PREP ATHLETE OF WEEK

Liz Doud, Flintridge Sacred Heart--Doud, a senior, scored 17 points and had 13 rebounds to lead her West team to victory over the East in the West San Gabriel Valley All-Star Classic basketball game.

COLLEGE ATHLETE OF WEEK

Devon Edwards, Cal Poly Pomona--Edwards, an All-American quarter-miler, won the 100- and 200-meter events in a five-team track meet at UC Irvine.

Edwards won the 100 in 10.77 seconds and the 200 in 21.10. Edwards has already met the NCAA qualifying standard in the 400 at 46.7.

MISCELLANY

The public is invited to participate in three grass volleyball tournaments that will staged over four months at Azusa Pacific. Pairs competition in men’s A, men’s B, women’s A and co-ed divisions will be staged April 16, May 7 and June 16. The entry fee is $15 a team in advance, $17 on the day of the tournament. Track and field meets that will include a variety of age-group competition will be staged in and around the San Gabriel Valley in the next few weeks. The Los Angeles Department of Parks and Recreation is conducting sign-ups at Carolyn Rosas Park in Rowland Heights and Steinmetz Park in Hacienda Heights for the Arco Jesse Owens track meet April 30.
