LONG BEACH : Police Center to Open in Willmore Section
Officials will take another step toward decentralizing the Police Department on Saturday when they open a storefront police center in the Willmore neighborhood on the westside.
The center, at 539 W. 9th St., will be staffed by a retired Long Beach police officer, a Spanish interpreter and volunteers. Residents will be able to file reports there and report suspicious activity.
The city’s redevelopment agency has agreed to pay the center’s first-year lease. After that, neighborhood groups that staff the facility will be expected to foot the bill. The city will pay the officer’s salary and phone bills, city spokeswoman Joan Caterino said.
The center’s grand opening, scheduled 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, will feature a K-9 police dog demonstration. The center will be open to the public from 2 to 7 p.m. Wednesdays through Sundays.
