Vehicle Hits Power Pole, Causing Outage
VAN NUYS — More than 18,000 homes were without electricity for several hours early Sunday after a driver fell asleep and struck a utility pole in Van Nuys.
City crews restored power to all the homes by 7:35 a.m., Los Angeles Department of Water and Power spokeswoman Debra Sass said.
“It’s unusual to have that many customers lose power from one accident,” Sass said.
The driver, who was not injured, crashed into the pole at the intersection of Ethel Avenue and Oxnard Street shortly after 1 a.m., after dozing off at the wheel, said Los Angeles Police Officer Vince Vicary.
