ROUNDUP : Longshot Wins the Arkansas Derby
Although it was nothing like Rockamundo’s 108-1 shocker a year ago, there was another surprise in the Arkansas Derby on Saturday.
Concern, a Broad Brush colt, came from last to beat Blumin Affair by a neck in 1:48 for the 1 1/8 miles.
Owned by Robert Meyerhoff, trained by Richard Small and ridden by Garrett Gomez, Concern paid $43.40 for his third victory in 13 starts. Previously, he had four seconds and four thirds.
Silver Goblin, adding Lasix after bleeding in the Remington Park Derby, set the pace and looked to be home free inside the final eighth of a mile. However, Concern and Blumin Affair--ridden for the first time by Eddie Delahoussaye--rallied together and overtook Silver Goblin, the 3-1 second choice, in the final yards. Silver Goblin finished three-quarters of a length behind Blumin Affair.
Ride The Rails, the 9-5 favorite, finished fourth, 1 1/2 lengths behind Silver Goblin.
Concern’s handlers said the colt will skip the Kentucky Derby and return to Maryland.

Colonial Affair, the 1993 Belmont Stakes winner, caught pacesetter Contract Court to win the $150,000 Excelsior Handicap at Aqueduct by a neck.
