PREP ROUNDUP : Irvine Swimmers Defeat Villa Park
The Irvine girls’ relay teams were the deciding factor in its 159-133 victory over Villa Park in a nonleague swim meet Friday at Heritage Park in Irvine.
Sophomore Wendy O’Brien, who has the county’s fastest times in the 50 and 100 freestyles this season, anchored the 200 and 400 freestyle relays for Irvine (9-2). The Vaqueros won the 200 medley relay in 1:56.77.
Tea Lindberg won the 200 individual medley (2:24.59) and 100 breaststroke (1:11.76) for Villa Park (8-2).
In other nonleague girls’ swimming:
Canyon 99, Cypress 69--Nicole Luque won the 200 individual medley (2:33.7) and 100 breaststroke (1:19.2) for visiting Canyon (10-2).
Foothill 111, Tustin 51--Miranda Lim won the 100 (1:01.52) and 200 freestyle (2:13.06) for Foothill’s (4-1 in league).
In boys’ nonleague swimming:
Foothill 99, Tustin 70--Jim Lowe won the 50 (22.60) and 500 freestyle (5:00.48) for the Tillers.
Villa Park 156, Irvine 134--Matt Cornue won the 200 freestyle (1:44.76) and 100 butterfly (55.30) as Villa Park (10-0) finished its third undefeated season.
In boys’ Century League tennis:
Canyon 14, Orange 7--Canyon’s (12-4, 5-3) doubles team of Warren Wang and Andy Choi improved their overall record to 26-7, sweeping their sets, 6-4, 7-5, 6-3.
In the Empire League:
Los Alamitos 16 2/3, El Dorado 4 1/3--The doubles teams of Adriano Satele-Steve Abdelmalek and Joe Shih-Herbert Manansala swept their sets for visiting Los Alamitos (13-3, 6-1). Satele and Abdelmalek won 6-3, 6-4, 6-0. Shih and Manansala won 6-2, 6-2, 6-2.
In the Orange League:
Valencia 11, Brea-Olinda 10--Chris Tobolski won two of his three singles sets, 6-3, 2-6, 6-2 for Valencia (13-7, 6-1).
Western 18 1/3, Savanna 2 2/3--Dean Ras and Danh Dao swept at No. 1 doubles for Western, 6-0, 6-1, 6-2. Western improved to 9-7, 6-2.
In the Pacific Coast League:
Laguna Beach 21, Century 0--The No. 3 doubles team of John Moritz and Brandon Purdy swept their sets, 6-0, 6-0, 6-0 for Laguna Beach (9-7, 5-2).
In the Sea View League:
Corona del Mar 21, Irvine 0--Jed Weinstein won in No. 1 singles, 6-0, 6-1, 6-0 for Corona del Mar (15-2, 11-1).
University 12, Newport Harbor 9--Seth Turbow and Chris Seid won two of three doubles sets for host University (12-4, 10-2).
Woodbridge 15 2/3, Saddleback 5 1/3--Reza Farokhpay, Yoshi Suzuki and freshman Jonny Biorkman, swept their singles sets for host Woodbridge (14-4, 9-3). Biorkman won 6-0, 6-0, 6-0.
In Olympic League girls’ track:
Orange Lutheran 116, Calvary Chapel 11--The Orange Lutheran girls’ won their fourth consecutive league championship with the help of junior Sara Oesch’s triple victories in the high jump (4-4), shotput (34-10 1/2) and the discus (101-11). Orange Lutheran finishes the season at 6-0.
In boys’ Empire League volleyball:
Western 3, Cypress 2--Western (8-6, 3-5) came back from a 2-0 deficit to win 7-15, 5-15, 15-13, 15-11, 16-14. Eric Temple had 38 kills, Alfredo Arguello had 27 kills and Eric Townsend had 91 assists for Western.
In the Garden Grove League:
Garden Grove 3, Santiago 0--Tuan Nguyen had 10 kills and Dan Amosa had seven blocks for Garden Grove (7-5, 7-2), which won, 15-3, 15-1, 15-2. The Argonauts are alone in second place.
Los Amigos 3, Bolsa Grande 0--Brian Laske had 14 kills and Jr. Elife had 13, as Los Amigos (13-2, 9-1) won 15-5, 15-3, 15-9.
In the Olympic League:
Calvary Chapel 3, La Mirada 0--Jason Mandall had 11 kills, as Calvary Chapel won 15-9, 15-5, 15-6.
In the Pacific Coast League:
Laguna Hills 3, Costa Mesa 2--Alex Hale had a game-high 26 kills to lead Laguna Hills to victory in the two-hour match, 14-16, 15-10, 12-15, 15-8, 15-11. Max Weiss had 15 kills, Chad Wronka had 12 blocks and Jamie Mann had 35 assists for the Hawks (5-9, 3-5). Lance Merrifield lead Costa Mesa with 24 kills.
In the Sea View League:
Newport Harbor 3, Saddleback 1--Greg Slick’s 20 kills led the Sailors (12-3, 11-1) to the 15-0, 11-15, 15-1, 15-7 victory.
In the South Coast League:
El Toro 3, Mater Dei 0--Chris Jacobesen had nine kills for the Chargers (13-1, 8-0), as they won 15-2, 15-6, 15-11.
In the Sunset League:
Edison 3, Westminister 0--Ryan Allen had 10 kills and Ben Beard had seven to lead Edison, 15-4, 15-4, 15-4. Davis Ransom had 23 assists and Pat McDonald had nine digs for the Chargers (9-5, 9-3).
