BASEBALL / DAILY REPORT : AROUND THE MAJORS : Mariners Release Reliever Thigpen

Bobby Thigpen, who had a major league record 57 saves in 1990, was given his unconditional release by the Seattle Mariners.

Thigpen, 30, who was signed by the Mariners as a free agent in January, made the team as a nonroster invitee out of spring training. But he struggled to an 0-2 record and a 9.39 earned-run average in seven appearances with the Mariners.

In his most recent outing on Wednesday night against the New York Yankees, Thigpen gave up three earned runs and a grand slam in 2 1/3 innings.

The Phillies put relief pitcher Larry Andersen on the disabled list and bought the contract of left-hander Andy Carter from Scranton-Wilkes-Barre.

Andersen, 40, was put on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to Thursday because of torn cartilage in his left knee.

“His knee is physically sound, but he is feeling enough discomfort to make him think about it, and that in turn is throwing off his mechanics,” team physician Phillip J. Marone said.

Andersen, who had arthroscopic surgery performed on the knee on March 28, said he was favoring the knee.

“I probably rushed back a little soo soon,” he said. “I don’t feel right. My mechanics aren’t right. I think it’s best for me and the club to get myself straightened out. It’ll help everyone in the long run.”

Andersen will be sent to the Red Barons for a rehabilitation assignment, the team said.

Carter, 25, joined the Phillies Friday night. It is the Philadelphia native’s first stint in the majors.
