TRACK : Ex-Dorsey Star Leaps to New Victories

The transition from high school to college competition hasn’t slowed Lynette Christian.

Neither has the transition from long jumper to sprinter.

Christian won the long jump for West Los Angeles College at the Western State Conference finals at Bakersfield College, leaping 18 feet 9 3/4 inches to break a 7-year-old meet record.

The three-time City Section long-jump champion from Dorsey High also won the 100 and 200 meters in 12.27 and 25.34 seconds and ran a leg on West L.A.’s 400-meter relay team, which placed seventh.

The USC-bound Christian had a hand in 32 of the Oilers’ 34 1/2 points.

Auria Roberto, last year’s City runner-up at 3,200 meters for Belmont High, has continued her success in the distances at Glendale College, accounting for 35 points in the April 29 meet. Roberto won the 800 (2:23.60), 1,500 (4:51.06), 5,000 (18:36.5) and was fourth in the 3,000 (10:53.4) to pace the Vaqueros to second in the team competition behind Santa Monica.

Mike Campos, who finished second in the 800 in the 1991 City championships for Garfield High, ran a leg on Glendale’s victorious 1,600-meter relay team, which clocked 3:18.49.

Ron Williams of Dorsey and Cynthia Midkiff of Fremont helped the Long Beach City College men and women to team titles at the South Coast Conference finals at Mt. San Antonio College on April 30.

Williams won the 400 in 46.80 and ran on the Vikings’ 1,600 relay, which ran 3:12.91 to win by nearly seven seconds. Midkiff was fifth in the 100 meters in 12.36.

Clarence Scott of Fremont has one of the top marks in the state in the long jump at 23-0 and ran a wind-aided 10.85 at the Southeastern Conference preliminaries Wednesday. But the sophomore won’t have a chance to compete in the state meet since dropping from varsity to the Cee division. . . . Locke Coach Timm MacDonald said he will resign at the end of the season to spend more time with his family. . . . City cross-country champion Ricardo Valenzuela of Belmont will attend Cal State L.A. . . . Jason Gibbs, Glenn Stewart, Ruben Benitez and Barry Smith of Cal State L.A. ran 40.21, the second-best time in school history, to place second in the California-Nevada Collegiate championships at UCLA Sunday.
