NATIONAL LEAGUE ROUNDUP : Two Rallies Give Marlins Victory
The Florida Marlins refused to go away, rallying twice and finally getting pinch-hitter Rich Renteria’s single that drove home Alex Arias with one out in the 11th inning Saturday night to beat the Philadelphia Phillies, 8-7, at Miami.
It was the Marlins’ fifth consecutive victory. Philadelphia has lost eight in a row on the road, its longest such streak in two years.
Richie Lewis (1-1), who worked out of a bases-loaded jam in the 10th inning, pitched two hitless innings for the victory.
It came when Bret Barberie singled to open the 11th off David West (0-4). Arias followed with a bloop single and Chuck Carr bunted into a forceout. Renteria followed with a single to left that barely eluded a diving Milt Thompson, glancing off his glove.
Darren Daulton homered and drove in four runs for the Phillies. Daulton’s seventh homer of the season, a two-run shot in the fifth inning, gave the Phillies a 7-5 lead.
The Marlins, who had rallied from a 5-0 deficit to tie the score, scored a run in the fifth inning on Arias’ sacrifice fly and added one on Charles Johnson’s sacrifice fly in the sixth to tie it again, 7-7.
“We never gave up,” said Marlin Manager Rene Lachemann. “We battled like this was the World Series. We are playing as well as we are capable right now.”
Cincinnati 11, Houston 7--Hal Morris broke an 0-for-16 slump with four hits and John Smiley made up for poor pitching by going three for three and scoring twice as the Reds won at Cincinnati.
Cincinnati went ahead to stay, 7-5, with a three-run fourth inning. Smiley started it with the first of his two doubles, and Morris drove in the go-ahead run with the second of his three doubles.
Smiley (4-2) gave up six runs, seven hits and three walks in 5 2/3 innings.
Atlanta 2, Montreal 1--Mark Lemke was 0 for 13 against Jeff Fassaro until hitting a game-winning home run in the ninth inning for the first time in his career.
Lemke’s two-out, two-run homer at Atlanta gave Tom Glavine (3-3) the victory after he had extended Atlanta’s shutout string to 29 innings before giving up a ninth-inning run.
Fassero (2-2) had struck out 11 and was one out away from his first shutout when he issued his first walk, to David Justice. Lemke then hit his second pitch over the left-field fence for Atlanta’s third consecutive victory.
New York 1, St. Louis 0--Bobby Jones scattered eight hits for his first shutout as the Mets won at St. Louis.
Jones (4-2) struck out five in his first complete game in the major leagues in 16 starts. He ended the game by retiring pinch-hitter Brian Jordan on a grounder with runners on first and second.
San Diego 2, Colorado 1--Dave Staton homered in the ninth inning to tie the score and in the same inning Phil Clark doubled home Ricky Gutierrez, who slid round catcher Danny Sheaffer’s tag to win it for the Padres at San Diego.
