PREP TENNIS ROUNDUP : University’s Meyers Misses Shot, League Title

With a little more touch and a little less power, University’s Jason Meyers could have settled the Sea View League doubles championship in a little more than an hour. Instead, Meyers took a huge swing at an easy volley that hit the net and kept Corona del Mar alive.

Some 90 minutes later, Meyers and Robbie Wilkins were walking off the court shaking their heads after being beaten by Corona del Mar’s Jed Weinstein and Tyler Stonebreaker, 5-7, 7-6 (9-7), 7-5, Wednesday at Los Caballeros Racquet Club in Fountain Valley.

Afterward, Meyers was still shaking his head.

“I had an easy put-away and blew it,” Meyers said. “What can you do though? You can’t get down on yourself.”

Weinstein said he could empathize with Meyers.

“I did the same thing up at Ojai,” Weinstein said. “I had an easy volley and I tried to hit the guy instead of making the easy shot. We wound up losing the match.”

Weinstein and Stonebreaker, seeded first, broke Meyers’ serve and eventually won a second-set tiebreaker over the No. 2-seeded team from University.

Both teams will play in the Southern Section individual sectionals Saturday at Edison and both probably will be seeded.

“This was still important for us,” Stonebreaker said. “We need to win matches like this. We had bad memories of Ojai.”

In the singles final, top-seeded Geoff Abrams of Newport Harbor beat teammate Jeff Thomsen, who was seeded third, 6-2, 6-0. But Thomsen’s biggest match came in the semifinals, when he outlasted Santa Margarita’s Kent Policky, 6-3, 0-6, 6-4. The victory qualifies Thomsen for the individual sectionals.

“The first match took a lot out of me,” Thomsen said. “I was glad to make it through the semifinals and into the next round. I’m drained.”

Thomsen has been suffering from food poisoning for the last week, but even a healthy Thomsen wouldn’t have had much of a shot at beating Abrams, who is ranked second nationally in the boys’ 16.

In the South Coast League:

France upset--Mater Dei’s Brett Hankey upset El Toro’s Johnny France in the final, 7-5, 6-0. France entered the match with a 60-0 record this season. In doubles, David Bailey and Christian Spaulding of Dana Hills beat Daniel Roditi and Jeff Shoemaker of San Clemente, 6-2, 7-5.

In the Century League:

Thompson wins--Foothill’s Ryan Thompson won the singles title and finished unbeaten in league with a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Villa Park’s Ryan Hollis. In the doubles final, Chad Smith and B.K. Chang of Villa Park defeated Canyon’s Heath Kula and Jerry Liao, 6-2, 7-6.

In the Orange League

Sunthanlop wins--Western’s Mack Sunthanlop won the boys’ singles title with a 6-4, 6-3 victory over Mark Fisher of Brea-Olinda.
