Navarone ended a 19-month drought Wednesday with a one-length victory over Idle Son in the $61,400 Spence Bay Handicap at Hollywood Park.

Ridden by Patrick Valenzuela, Navarone covered 1 1/16 miles on the turf in 1:41 3/5. The 6-year-old rallied from next to last in the six-horse field, catching Idle Son near the wire.

Navarone paid $9.40, $3.20 and $2.80 as the second choice in the wagering. He was named horse of the meeting at Del Mar in 1992 before injuries interrupted his career.

Valenzuela broke a losing streak of his own, winning for the first time in 41 mounts at Hollywood Park.

Idle Son, making his first start since last August, returned $2.60 and $2.20 as the 7-10 favorite. British-bred Profusion was another nose back in third and paid $3.

The victory, worth $34,400, increased Navarone’s career earnings to $561,575 with seven victories in 16 starts.
