Hartman Runs Off to Texas San Antonio

Dave Hartman, the 1991 state champion in the 3,200 meters for Canyon High, has withdrawn from Villanova University and will run cross-country for Texas San Antonio in the fall.

Hartman, 21, said a lack of progress in track was his primary reason for transferring.

“I haven’t been real pleased with the way things have been going in track during the last couple of years,” Hartman said. “I had some pretty good cross-country seasons (at Villanova), but I never ran like I felt I should have in track. It just wasn’t a real good training environment for (a 5,000/10,000-meter runner) like myself.”

Hartman placed 33rd as a sophomore in the 1992 NCAA cross-country championships to help Villanova to a fourth-place finish, but his track bests of 8 minutes 23 seconds in the 3,000, 14:21 in the 5,000 and 30:49 in the 10,000 fell far short of his expectations.

He will attend Texas San Antonio--an NCAA Division I school--on a full athletic scholarship and has one season of eligibility remaining in cross-country and two in track.
