Philip Schildts
Calvary Chapel, Sr.
Volleyball / Outside hitter
Neither Schildts nor Coach Chuck Wright realized just how well Schildts had played in Calvary Chapel’s three-game sweep of Santa Ynez in the Division III championship match Saturday, until Wright reviewed the statistics. He found that Schildts had 19 kills in 27 attempts with only three errors for a 70% hitting percentage. He had four digs and four blocks and passed remarkably well. Of 22 passes to the setter, 17 were perfectly placed, Wright said. “He’s played well all year but this was a nice way to culminate his high school career,” Wright said.
Other notables:
* Chris Ponchak, Fountain Valley, hit a grand slam in the first inning of a 12-1 victory over Simi Valley in the Division I baseball quarterfinals.
* Jakub Pietrowski, Ocean View, won the Southern Section individual tennis title in singles, beating Temple City’s Sandy Gentile, 6-2, 6-4.
* Tiger Woods, Western, shot a Southern Section-record 66, five-under-par, at La Cumbre Country Club to win his third individual title in four years.
* Nick Ziegler, Huntington Beach, had 16 kills in the Oilers’ four-game victory over Laguna Beach in the Division I title match.
