Where is the coach of a girls’ track team going to celebrate his team’s 10th-place finish in the state meet?

“I’m going to Davenport, Iowa,” St. Bernard Coach Mike Trujillo said.

Trujillo has resigned as a science teacher and boys’ and girls’ track coach at St. Bernard to move with his wife Katie to Davenport. Katie recently completed her doctorate in psychology and received a teaching position at St. Ambrose.

“She’s going to be a professor there and I’m going to tag along,” Mike said. “The timing could not be worse.”

Trujillo worked as an assistant at St. Bernard for seven years before becoming coach this season.

The Viking girls, led by four freshmen, finished 10th in the team standings during the state meet Saturday at Cerritos College.

Freshman Malika Edmonson finished fourth in the 400 meters in 54.85 seconds. Myleik Teele, Regine Caruthers, Roshanna Payne and Edmonson also ran 47.51 to finish fourth in the 400 relay and 3:46.81 to finish third in the 1,600 relay.

Jason Brownlee of Hamilton placed third in the 300 intermediate hurdles. Brownlee ran 37.44 to finish behind Muir’s Ken Haslip (37.14) and Newhall Hart’s Jason Medearis (37.38).

SOARING EAGLES

The No. 2 doubles team of Kevin Pivnick and Greg Lewis swept their three sets as Brentwood defeated longtime nemesis Pasadena Poly, 14 1/3-6 2/3, June 1 in the Southern Section Division III tennis championships at the Riviera Country Club.

Pivnick and Lewis upset the No. 1 doubles team of Jason Tan and David Newhall, 6-3, to clinch the title.

The Eagles (19-3) also received three wins from their No. 1 doubles team of Tyler Barnett and Scott Kaufman, and from Adam Gross, the No. 1 singles player.

The two teams have met in the finals five times in the last six years. Brentwood’s last victory over Poly came in the 1990 championship.

STRANDED

The Crossroads softball team stranded 11 runners and lost to Paraclete of Lancaster, 3-0, May 31 in a Southern Section Division V semifinal game.

Pitcher Jessica Schulman suffered her first playoff loss in 13 decisions. Schulman (17-7) pitched the Roadrunners to championship victories in 1992 and 1993.

“It was not so much the offense broke down, but we did not get the timely hits,” Crossroads Coach Tom Gray said.

NAMES IN THE NEWS

* Danny Burke, who coached the Palisades girls’ volleyball team to the City Section 4-A title, has resigned to become coach at Crossroads.

* Beverly Hills shortstop Brandon Hearn was selected in the 33rd round by the Colorado Rockies in last week’s major league draft.

Hearn batted .313 with 25 hits, 15 runs batted in and 10 runs scored to earn all-Ocean League honors.

* Oliver Catlin and Jeff Manson, Palisades’ No. 1 doubles team, won their second consecutive title last Thursday at the City Section championships. Catlin-Manson defeated the Dolphins’ No. 2 team of Daniel Elperin and Jason Ebin, 6-2, 6-7 (7-5), 6-4.

ALL-STAR GAME

The Westside All-Star baseball game is scheduled for 3 p.m. Saturday at Jackie Robinson Stadium.

St. Bernard outfielder Dana Harrison, The Times’ 1994 Westside Player of the Year, and Beverly Hills infielder Jeremy Booth, The Times’ 1993 Westside Player of the Year, will represent the top seniors from area Southern Section schools.

Ernie Soto, who turned around a struggling St. Monica program, will coach the Southern Section team.

The City Section all-stars, coached by Westchester’s Ron Kasparian, will feature Venice third baseman Gilbert Solis and Westchester catcher Rod Washington.
