‘Joey Breaker’

Steven Starr’s 1993 debut feature is a jaunty little movie that’s full of surprises. Richard Edson has the title role as a brash Manhattan-based talent agent near the top of a profession he clearly loves, a man who seems content when a series of events affect his life more than he--or we--at first realize. There are a couple of flaws typical of a first film: There’s too much trade talk in its first third, and Joey’s entire odyssey could have been more fully developed and contained a bit of foreshadowing. Nevertheless, it possesses a welcome and engaging substance along with its humor (Cinemax Thursday at 5:40 a.m.).
