BASEBALL / DAILY REPORT : DODGERS : Martinez Replaces Scratched Candiotti

Ramon Martinez started Saturday’s game against Colorado in place of scheduled starting pitcher Tom Candiotti, who was scratched about 4 p.m. because of a sore toe on his right foot.

“(Candiotti) wanted to try it, but there’s no sense in doing that, maybe hurt something else,” pitching coach Ron Perranoski said. “I asked Ramon if he’d be OK, and he said yeah.”

Martinez started Saturday on his regular four days of rest, and Pedro Astacio is scheduled to pitch today, also on four days’ rest.

“We’ll give that thing as much time as we have to,” Perranoski said. “I’d think (Candiotti will start again) around Tuesday.”

Trainer Bill Buhler said Candiotti aggravated the big toe on his right foot during batting practice Friday night, and that Candiotti has suffered from the problem before--only never enough to miss a start.

Left-handed reliever Brian Barnes, acquired from the Cleveland Indians on Thursday, was rocked in his first Dodger outing Saturday night. Barnes entered with one out and the bases loaded in the sixth and gave up a two-run ground-rule double to Mike Kingery and a run-scoring single to Joe Girardi. He was replaced by Roger McDowell without recording an out.

Barnes relieved Ismael Valdes, who had been perfect in his first two outings but walked the only two Rockies he faced Saturday. Both scored.
