Celebrate With Davy Crockett
Fess Parker--best known as the brave frontiersmen in coonskin hats, Davy Crockett and Daniel Boone--has settled in northern Santa Barbara County on a 700-acre ranch as a winemaker. But he hasn’t forgotten his roots. The “Davy Crockett All-American Independence Day Celebration” will take place Sunday on the grounds of Parker’s winery, 6200 Foxen Canyon Road in Los Olivos.
There will be a mountain man encampment with ax throwing demonstrations and crafts from the frontier days. You can ride a stagecoach, listen to tales of the Old West and hear a reading of the Declaration of Independence. A live country band and a chicken supper round out the afternoon.
Kids and grown-ups can play games of the period, such as the gunnysack race, three-legged race and the fire brigade water bucket race. There will be a Davy Crockett costume contest open to all ages.
The Fess Parker family, including grandchildren, will join the event, scheduled for 3-7 p.m. Parker and his wife, Marcy, run the winery, son Eli is a winemaker and daughter Ashley handles the marketing. The winery’s first harvest was in 1992. The Independence Day celebration is $25 for adults (includes chicken supper) and $12 for children; tickets at the gate $15 (without dinner). Information: (800) 841-1104.
