Cardiologist Named National Police Surgeon
Long Beach Memorial Medical Center cardiologist Edgar R. Palarea has been elected National Police Surgeon by the American Federation of Police. Palarea has been a cardiology consultant to the Los Angeles police and fire departments. The police federation is a national fraternal association of law enforcement officers.

Karna Bramble, Cal State Long Beach associate professor of nursing, was named the 1994 Nurse Practitioner of Distinction by the California Coalition of Nurse Practitioners. The award is given annually to a member who has made exceptional contributions to health care and to the nurse practitioner profession.

Four Southeast-area students at Cal State Long Beach recently were inducted into the university’s chapter of Phi Beta Kappa, the nation’s oldest and most prestigious honor society for liberal arts and sciences students. The Cal State Long Beach members are Aristi Contos of Lakewood, Isaac D. Guzman and Esther F. Rivera of Long Beach, and Rola Karam of Downey.

Downey resident Bennie C. Reagan was among the volunteers honored for donating time and resources to help crippled children in Mexicali, Mexico. The Los Angeles Orthopaedic Hospital’s International Children’s Program singled out Reagan for his fund-raising efforts.

Martin Ortiz, director of the Center of Mexican-American Affairs at Whittier College, won the Positive Image Award from the college’s Hispanic Outreach Task Force. Ortiz, who founded the center, was honored for creating an institution dedicated to the support of Latino students.
