LOS ANGELES : $148.6-Million Contract Awarded in Port Project
The Los Angeles City Harbor Commission has awarded a $148.6-million contract for what it described as the largest dredging and landfill project in the nation, one that will create nearly a mile of new berths for the Port of Los Angeles.
The awarding of contracts to a joint venture of Great Lakes Dredging & Dock Co. and Connolly-Pacific Co. was able to proceed after the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers approved permits for the dredging of three miles of new navigation channels. The corps also agreed to pay $60 million of the initial cost of the project.
The three-year dredging project will begin in August and create 4,200 jobs, according to port officials. It will also form a new, 265-acre land mass south of Pier 300 on Terminal Island that will be dubbed Pier 400.
