AMERICAN LEGION BASEBALL ROUNDUP : Woodland Hills East Comes Back From Eight-Run Deficit, 12-11
Woodland Hills East rallied from eight runs down to upset Woodland Hills West, 12-11, in a District 20 American Legion baseball game Saturday at El Camino Real High.
Woodland Hills East capped its rally in the eighth inning when David Helman’s opposite-field single scored Mike Ross.
Woodland Hills East trailed, 8-0, in the fifth inning but scored five runs in the fifth and five more in the seventh.
Stanford-bound Jon Schaeffer had four hits and three runs batted in while teammate Jacob Young added three doubles for Woodland Hills East (7-12).
Billy Burnette led Woodland Hills West (14-6) with a grand slam and six RBIs.
In other District 20 games:
West Hills 11, Granada Hills East 6--Brandon Gray pitched a complete game in his first Legion start and also drove in four runs as West Hills (11-8) kept its playoff hopes alive.
Gray struck out five and walked eight for West Hills.
Christian Bartlett had a home run, a double and three RBIs for Granada Hills East (8-12).
Van Nuys South 15, Sunland Tujunga 4--David Corleto collected three hits and three RBIs, and Aaron Amitin added a three-run double during an eight-run fourth inning that powered Van Nuys South to the lopsided victory at Tujunga Field.
Walter Rios (3-0) scattered four hits over seven innings for Van Nuys South.
Mike Spielman hit a three-run home run in the sixth inning for Sunland Tujunga (9-11).
Antelope Valley South 9, Palmdale 2--Chris Tapia banged out three doubles in Antelope Valley South’s victory at Antelope Valley High.
Antelope Valley South (17-3) collected 15 hits.
Van Nuys East 6, Verdugo Hills 5--Francisco Dongo went three for four, including a double in the fourth inning that drove in the winning runs for Van Nuys East in the first of two games.
Justin Bunch and Eddie Romero each added two RBIs.
Van Nuys East 20, Las Virgenes 6--Bunch led the way for with three hits and three RBIs, while Romero added two hits with two RBIs as Van Nuys East trounced Las Virgenes (12-8) for its second victory of the day.
Five players had two RBIs for Van Nuys East (14-4-1). Andy Lutz earned his second victory.
Las Virgenes 6, Encino Crespi 4--Sam Rutherford and Billy Hoover hit triples as Las Virgenes scored three runs in the eighth inning to pull out the victory at Valley College.
Mike Melucci and Kevin Sass each had three hits for Las Virgenes (11-8).
In District 16 games:
Westlake Royal 4-5, Santa Barbara 3-3--Brent Egan scored the winning run in the bottom of the seventh in the first game when Santa Barbara failed to turn a double play that would have ended the inning.
Brian Fernandez went two for three for Westlake Royal in the opener.
Westlake Royal (24-1) held off a rally by Santa Barbara (8-10) in the seventh inning of the second game to get a sweep at Moorpark College.
