Padilla Doesn’t Lack Motivation in First Title Defense at Home
Zack Padilla of Azusa, who won the World Boxing Organization junior-welterweight title more than a year ago, defends the title for the first time in his home area today at the Grand Olympic Auditorium, headlining a CBS-televised card.
Padilla (21-1-1, 13 knockouts) is scheduled to face former World Boxing Council featherweight champion Juan LaPorte (40-14, 22 knockouts).
“Being nervous motivates me, and I’m real nervous--so I guess I’m motivated,” Padilla said. “It’s on CBS, plus it’s the first time I’m defending my title here in L.A.
“So I’ve got my bones jumping right now. I’m more nervous now than when I fought for the title.”
Known for his busy style, Padilla won the WBO championship, which is not considered a major title, by upsetting Carlos (Bolillo) Gonzalez last June 7.
Also on the card is a scheduled 10-rounder between lightweight prospect Shane Mosley (12-0, 11 knockouts) and Narciso Valenzuela, who is 35-16-2, including recent losses to Oscar De La Hoya and Carlos Hernandez.
Valenzuela knocked down De La Hoya in the first round in their meeting last Oct. 30 before being knocked out later in the round. Valenzuela, who has lost his last four fights, lost a decision to Hernandez earlier this year.
Bouts begin at noon.
