BALDWIN PARK : New Plant to Purify Tainted Ground Water
Local water officials and state environmental authorities last week kicked off construction of a well treatment plant in Baldwin Park that will purify enough contaminated ground water to supply about 6,000 families.
The plant, which is to be in operation by the end of the year, will use a carbon filter to purify water from the Big Dalton well in Baldwin Park. The well is contaminated with solvents and other chemicals. Customers of Suburban Water Systems of Covina will receive the purified water. Suburban serves Glendora, West Covina, Covina and La Puente.
The California Department of Toxic Substances Control is paying $2 million to build the treatment plant. The San Gabriel Basin Water Quality Authority, which coordinates local water cleanup programs, is managing the project.
