World IN BRIEF : RUSSIA : Conflicting Accounts on Fatal Plane Crash

A military AN-12 turboprop that crashed in eastern Siberia, killing all 47 people aboard, “simply missed the runway,” an air force spokesman said. But other officials gave different accounts, including that the pilot failed to see a hill and that an engine caught fire. The crash in Bada reinforced concerns about the safety of air travel in Russia, where more than 270 people have died in accidents this year.
