Summer League Game Caused Ollie’s Absence

Damon Ollie, scheduled to play in a high school all-star basketball game last weekend at UC Irvine, said Friday that he did not play because of a commitment to another tournament in Los Angeles.

Ollie, a 6-foot-5 forward from North Hollywood High, played in a summer league game Saturday at Los Angeles Trade Tech at the same time the all-star game was scheduled. The UC Irvine game, featuring top college freshmen-to-be from Southern California, was part of a tripleheader that included the championship games in the NBA rookie and veteran divisions of the Summer Pro League.

Ollie, a Times All-Valley selection, averaged 20.1 points, 18 rebounds and 4.5 blocked shots as a senior in 1994. He will attend Santa Monica College in the fall after failing to achieve the NCAA minimum score of 700 on the Scholastic Aptitude Test.

Golf

Mike Turner of Sherman Oaks rallied with a two-under-par 70 to finish in a three-way tie for 17th place in the 28th Pacific Coast Amateur Championship at the Bear Creek Golf Club in Murrieta, Calif.

Darren Angel of Northridge shot a six-over 76 in the final round to finish in a two-way tie for 17th place at the American Junior Golf Assn. Boys Junior Championship at the Four Seasons Resort Tournament Players Course in Irving, Tex.

Angel had a 72-hole total of 286 and finished 14 strokes behind Robert Floyd of Miami Beach. Floyd is the son of PGA Tour standout Ray Floyd.

Ben Cherney of Encino shot his second consecutive 80 to finish in a four-way tie for 66th at 307.

Millie Stanley of Los Angeles defeated Karen Mabli of Palos Verdes, 4 and 3, to win the 93rd Annual Southern Championship at Oakmont Country Club in Glendale.

Football

Kim Lawhorn, a member of UCLA’s Rose Bowl team last season, has been added as a walk-on football assistant at Granada Hills High. Lawhorn, 23, will coach the offensive and defensive lines.

Baseball

Sunrise Little League of Woodland Hills has scheduled player registration for Aug. 20, 27 and Sept. 3 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Players between the ages of 5 and 12 are eligible.

The Oxnard Mermaids, a slow-pitch team for girls 16 and under, won two games and lost three at a national tournament sponsored by the Pony softball organization.

The three-day tournament in Round Rock, Tex., drew 60 teams from across the country.
