ANAHEIM : Disney Ice Facility to Be Considered

A community ice rink downtown? It could happen.

The City Council Tuesday will consider a joint proposal by the city and the Walt Disney Co. to build a 100,000-square-foot rink to serve as a practice site for the Mighty Ducks hockey team and as a community youth center.

It would be built on three acres at the southwest corner of Lincoln Avenue and Clementine Street. It would house two ice rinks--one of Olympic size to seat 300 spectators and the other of National Hockey League size to hold up to 1,000.

The Ducks would use the rink about 200 hours a year, Disney officials say, leaving some 12,800 hours of ice time for the public.

Disney’s new nonprofit program called GOALS--Growth Opportunities Through Athletics, Learning and Service--also would use the rink. Patterned after a similar program in Harlem, GOALS will reinforce positive values to underprivileged children.

If the rink is approved Tuesday night, Disney officials say it could be open by September, 1995.

The Planning Commission unanimously approved the project in July.
