LOS ALAMITOS : Hearing Scheduled on Reopening School
The Los Alamitos Unified School District will hold a public hearing on Aug. 30 to consider whether Oak Middle School, which has been closed since 1985, should be reopened.
School district officials also will seek ideas from the community about how to finance reopening the school. One proposal is to sell the closed Weaver Elementary School in Rossmoor.
The hearing will begin at 7 p.m. at the Performing Arts Center at Los Alamitos High School.
Last year, the school district considered selling or leasing the 23-acre Oak Middle School site to pay for planned improvements to other schools in the district.
But a group of parents who called themselves SOS, or Save Oak School, persuaded the school board to keep the school site, arguing that it may be needed in the future to accommodate the growing number of sixth-, seventh- and eighth-grade students.
The school district, which serves about 7,300 students from Los Alamitos, Rossmoor and Seal Beach, has only one middle school--McAuliffe Middle School.
The Oak Middle School site is currently being used as the campus of the Orange County High School of the Arts.
