Port Hueneme Man Arrested After Standoff With Police
A despondent 34-year-old man was arrested early Tuesday in Port Hueneme after a six-hour standoff with police during which he shot at surrounding homes half a dozen times, authorities said.
As a precaution, police evacuated about 100 people living in the Surfside I condominium complex while members of the Oxnard police SWAT team negotiated with Barry Doyle.
Doyle agreed to surrender about 1 a.m. and was taken into custody at gunpoint. He was booked into County Jail on suspicion of assaulting a peace officer, firing at an occupied dwelling and damaging jail property inside the Port Hueneme police station. He was being held in lieu of $5,000 bail.
The incident began about 6:40 p.m. when Port Hueneme police responded to a call of a man threatening to kill himself in his home in the 200 block of East Surfside Drive.
During the standoff, Doyle fired several shots that struck neighboring condominiums, police said. After his arrest, Doyle was taken to the Port Hueneme police station where he shredded a mattress in a holding cell before being subdued and transferred to County Jail.
Port Hueneme Police Sgt. Jerry Beck said Doyle was distraught over the state of his financial affairs and the fact that his children live on the East Coast.
