The Orange County Tigers defeated Gaylord, Minn., 7-2, Wednesday as pool play continued in the Continental Amateur Baseball Assn. World Series in Eau Claire, Wis.

Mike McDonald, a former Mater Dei pitcher who now plays for Santa Clara, combined with Fountain Valley’s John Kroeger and Vince Dileva of Palos Verdes on a five-hitter. Ron Kiino, a Foothill High graduate now at Brown, had two doubles.

Orange County took a 2-1 pool-play record into a late game Wednesday against Brooklyn, N.Y. Pool play continues today, with the teams with the top four records advancing into the championship bracket this weekend.

The Orange County Cardinals were trounced by Memphis, Tenn., 18-6, and eliminated from the Connie Mack World Series Wednesday in Farmington, N.M.

The Cardinals led, 5-1, after three innings behind the hitting of Derek Baker, who finished with two singles and a home run.

But Memphis scored 17 runs off 18 hits over the next three innings. Tim Edlestein led Memphis with a single, three doubles and a home run in the double-elimination tournament.

The Cardinals close their season 32-7.

The U.S. Tennis Assn.’s League Sectional Championships begin today at Los Caballeros Sports Village. Seventy-eight teams and 981 players from 12 areas in southern and central California will compete in the event that will run through Sunday.

The matches will consist of two singles and three doubles events. Winning teams advance to the USTA League Tennis National Championships, which take place in late September at various sites around the country.

Mark Mollner, a defensive end at Estancia, will attend Concordia College in Seward, Neb., this fall. According to his father, Loren, he has been assured an athletic scholarship the next year.

Mollner was a two-time All-Pacific Coast League player and a shotputter in track.

Edison baseball Coach Paul Harrell has resigned after seven seasons. He will be replaced by Tom Duggan, who coached Edison’s freshman team in 1989 and has been an assistant at Rancho Santiago College since then.

The Chargers were 102-73-4 and played for the 1991 Southern Section Division I championship under Harrell’s direction. During his seven-year tenure, he coached his twin sons, Matt and Todd, in 1991-92; another son, Jeff, will be a freshman at Edison in the fall.

Harrell will continue to teach life science and coach lower-level girls’ volleyball.
