An elderly woman tending the grave of her husband was shot and killed Tuesday when a group of bank robbers apparently saw her while changing vehicles at the cemetery, police said.

Ruby Parker, 81, was shot near this central Texas town, about 100 miles north of Houston, after eight men robbed the Normangee State Bank of about $100,000.

A Texas state trooper was also injured in the incident when he was shot in the shoulder during a car chase as the bank robbers left the cemetery in two vehicles, the Leon County Sheriff’s Department said.

Four of the eight bank robbers were later captured.

The wounded officer was listed in stable condition at a local hospital.

Residents of Normangee said the shooting of Parker was believed to be the first homicide in the town of about 600 people in the last 25 years.
