Arcangues, 133-1 Winner of Cup Classic, Retired

DEL MAR —  Arcangues, who scored one of the biggest upsets in thoroughbred racing history last fall, has been retired.

Owned by Daniel Wildenstein and trained by Dick Mandella, Arcangues was making his first start in the United States and his first on dirt last November when he won the $3-million Breeders’ Cup Classic at Santa Anita.

A 133-1 longshot, Arcangues paid $269.20.

“This horse has always had a few (physical) problems and he came out of the (Hollywood) Gold Cup with a few others,” Mandella said Friday. “He’s too nice a horse to take any chances.”

Arcangues, a 6-year-old son of Sagace, had six victories in 19 starts and earnings of more than $1.9 million. It was not immediately decided if he will stand at stud in France or the United States.
