American Airlines to Reduce Headquarters Staff: The nation’s largest carrier in terms of revenue said it will reduce its headquarters staff as part of a program to lower costs. The job cuts, which have yet to be determined, will be another step in the airline’s campaign to save $750 million in annual labor costs and become more competitive with low-fare challengers such as Southwest Airlines Co. American, a unit of AMR Corp., said it is looking to save an additional $250 million a year in other parts of its operations. About 10,000 of American’s 90,000 employees work at the headquarters near the Dallas-Ft. Worth airport. A study over the next five months, conducted by an outside consultant, will determine the extent of the cuts, American said.
