LOS ANGELES : Coast Guard to Step Up Checks for Drunk Boaters
The Coast Guard plans to step up enforcement along the entire California coast this Labor Day weekend, which traditionally is one of the busiest boating weekends of the year.
The idea is to get boaters who have had too much to drink off the water, a spokesman said. Accidents involving alcohol and boating have been on the rise in California, according to Coast Guard spokesman Dennis Hall.
Coast Guard crews will stop boats and administer sobriety tests to occupants if the pilot of a vessel appears intoxicated.
