SPORTS : NOTEBOOK / GARY KLEIN : Teen-Ager Pleads Not Guilty in Shooting Death of Covina High Linebacker

Salvador Michael Camarillo, 19, pleaded not guilty on Tuesday to murder charges stemming from the shooting death of former Covina High linebacker Leo Asoau.

A preliminary hearing was set for Sept. 13 by Citrus Municipal Court Judge Robert Young.

Asoau, a 6-foot-3, 225-pound linebacker who was a Times All-San Gabriel Valley selection last year, was shot to death Aug. 14 outside a friend’s home. Camarillo has been held on $1-million bail since his arrest.

Asoau had received a scholarship to play football at Washington State and was killed a week before he was scheduled to leave for Pullman, Wash.

The recent Little League World Series included a San Gabriel Valley presence as Dr. Vincent Fortanasce, chairman of the department of medicine at Methodist Hospital in Arcadia, was inducted into the Little League Hall of Excellence along with Hall of Fame pitcher Jim Palmer and astronaut Dr. Story Musgrave.

Fortanasce, an Altadena resident who was a member of the 1964 U.S. Olympic weightlifting team, played Little League baseball in New York and coached in Pasadena and Sierra Madre for 12 years.

The third annual Bowl to Bowl walk, featuring a 1.5-mile recreational walk, a 5-K fitness walk and a 5-K sanctioned race walk, is scheduled for 1 p.m. Oct. 30 at the Rose Bowl.
