PRO FOOTBALL / DAILY REPORT : AROUND THE NFL : Cardinals Sign Schroeder as No. 3 QB

The Cardinals signed Jay Schroeder, picking up a third quarterback who went to the Super Bowl with another team.

To make room, the club released quarterback Shawn Moore, who was signed two weeks ago after Denver waived him.

Schroeder moved into the No. 3 spot, behind Steve Beuerlein and Jim McMahon. Although he started 91 of 109 games with the Washington Redskins, the Raiders and Cincinnati, Schroeder said he wouldn’t lobby for Beuerlein’s starting spot.

The Bengals cut Schroeder last week.

Six days before the NFL’s most celebrated reunion, Joe Montana admitted Monday that he has not spoken to Steve Young since Montana left the 49ers after the 1992 season.

He also did not deny that tension existed between the two quarterbacks during Montana’s last season in San Francisco, when he was sidelined because of an elbow injury while Young established himself as the starter.

“Anytime somebody has something that you want, if there is not tension there, then you will be on the second team all of your life,” Montana said. “I think there has to be tension there.”

Montana and Kansas City will play host to the 49ers on Sunday. It will be the first time Montana has faced his former team.

“It will be a fun and interesting experience,” Montana said. “I’ll be doing something I never imagined I’d have to.”

Montana said he would have stayed with the 49ers if they had offered him a chance to compete with Young for the starting job in 1993. Even though he was named the starter shortly before he agreed to a trade with the Chiefs, Montana said he was only being paid lip service.

“I didn’t want anything given to me,” he said. “All I really wanted and asked for was fair competition. But they weren’t going to open it to competition, period.”

San Diego Chargers Coach Bobby Ross said the team hasn’t decided what it will do with safety James Fuller, who was arrested early Saturday for investigation of assault with a deadly weapon. He did not make the trip to Denver for Sunday’s game. . . . Bronco tight end Shannon Sharpe sprained his right knee in the game end could be sidelined up to four weeks. . . . Houston Oilers quarterback Cody Carlson, who sustained a second-degree separation of his left, non-throwing--shoulder, said the shoulder was sore Monday but he doesn’t know whether he’ll play Sunday against the Dallas Cowboys. . . . Fox’s overnight rating for its first Sunday of regular-season NFL coverage was 18% higher than CBS’ rating for the first weekend of the 1993 season. . . . Safety George Teague, who had two interceptions Sunday in the Green Bay Packers’ 16-10 victory over the Minnesota Vikings, broke his right thumb but said he won’t miss practice time. . . . Fullback Brad Baxter of the New York Jets will be sidelined three to four weeks because of a sprained big toe on his right foot.
