PRO FOOTBALL / DAILY REPORT : RAMS : Rison Provides Some Words to Play By

Andre Rison’s new career as a pro football forecaster wasn’t a big hit with the Rams, who took issue Monday with the Atlanta wide receiver’s prediction of a victory over them next Sunday.

Frustrated after the Falcons’ 31-28 overtime loss to the Lions at Detroit on Sunday, Rison said: “I’m going to guarantee a win. You can print it in USA Today, as far as you can print it. You can print it all the way to L.A.”

Rison’s comments made national TV highlight shows and local newspapers and became instant bulletin board material for the Rams, who are feeling pretty good about themselves coming off a 14-12 victory over Arizona on Sunday at Anaheim Stadium.

“It’s very disrespectful,” Ram free safety Anthony Newman said. “That’s not what being a professional football player is all about. That’s a bunch of high school . . .

“He forgets that we still have to play a game. We’re going to have a lot of fun out there, believe me. We’re not going to say anything. We’re not going to stoop down to his level. We’re going to do something physically to show what we’re all about.”

The Falcons have won six of the past seven meetings, and the Rams haven’t won in Atlanta since the 1989 opener.

Cornerback Darryl Henley said he will be at Rams Park today with the intention of re-signing a one-year, $350,000 contract.

Henley was cut last month because bail restrictions from a federal drug trafficking indictment limited his travel with the team.

But U.S. District Judge Gary L. Taylor sided with Henley’s attorneys Friday and dropped a provision from his bail that a U.S. marshal or pretrial services agency officer accompany Henley on the road, as long as $2 million in bail was posted and Henley provided an additional $200,000 cash deposit.

“I haven’t talked to Darryl or the Rams today,” said Marvin Demoff, Henley’s agent. “Our understanding Friday was that they were going to sign him Monday or Tuesday.”

Cardinal Coach Buddy Ryan responded angrily to the postgame comment of Ram assistant head coach Joe Vitt, whom he has known since coaching at the University of Buffalo. Vitt said the Rams would be undefeated if they could play a Ryan team each week.

“Your information is no better than your source,” Ryan said. “I remember he was a go-fer in Buffalo, going after coffee. I guess he’s really come up in the world.”

Because of an error by the Ram publicity department, the team’s previous fumble return record was incorrectly reported Sunday. The record was 67 yards by Jim Peterson in 1975. Cornerback Todd Lyght broke it with a 74-yard return against Arizona.
