YORBA LINDA : Contest Planned to Name Gym Near Park
A contest will be held to name a gymnasium to be built this fall between Hurless Barton Park and Yorba Linda Middle School.
The City Council called for the contest after rejecting two names proposed by the city’s Parks and Recreation Commission. The suggestions were Yorba Linda Grove and Yorba Linda Fieldhouse.
“I don’t like the names suggested (because) they don’t imply any connection to the” Placentia-Yorba Linda Unified School District, Councilman Daniel T. Welch said. “This is a joint facility and I would encourage us to find a name that doesn’t identify (the city) over the” school district.
The contest will be arranged by the Parks and Recreation Department and will be open to all residents.
Groundbreaking ceremonies for the new gym will be held Saturday at 10 a.m. at Hurless Barton Park, on Casa Loma Avenue.
