GARDENA : Soccer Field Considered as Senior Housing Site
City officials are considering converting a soccer field into a housing site for senior citizens.
Mayor Donald L. Dear said the city is trying to secure funding from the federal Department of Housing and Urban Development to build 50 housing units.
The soccer field in South Park between Vermont and Normandie avenues is a potential site for the development, Dear said.
“It would be a logical spot, but it’s certainly not a done deal,” he said. “We haven’t even got the (funding). “
Although only in its infancy, the city proposal has drawn criticism from the South Park Community Assn. and Neighborhood Watch.
Spokesman Rafael Garcia, who has lived next to the soccer field since 1976, said too many city vistas are being eroded by development.
The city previously took large parts of South Park for two other senior housing buildings built in the past five years, he said.
“The city has taken a 27-acre site that was for a park and gradually they’re turning it into a senior housing development,” Garcia said.
