Bobby Hurley testified in Sacramento County Superior Court that he remembers only “bits and pieces” of the collision that almost killed him last December.

Hurley, the first-round draft choice of the Sacramento Kings last year, blamed the other motorist for the crash. Hurley said he saw no traffic when he pulled onto a dark road near Arco Arena after a basketball game last Dec. 12.

“As I was through the midst of the intersection, in a split second, I noticed maybe a taillight, but definitely not headlights, and I knew I was going to be struck then,” Hurley told the court.

Daniel Wieland’s station wagon was traveling at about 55 m.p.h. when Hurley’s four-wheel drive vehicle turned into Wieland’s path, attorneys said. Hurley, 23, was not wearing a seat belt. He was thrown into a drainage ditch and suffered multiple injuries.

Nearly a year after it was proposed by Atlanta Olympics chief Billy Payne, Gov. Zell Miller approved plans for a downtown park as a festive gathering spot during the 1996 Games. Promising that the park will be privately funded, Gov. Miller said he authorized state officials to begin acquiring land and developing the $50-million, 60-acre Centennial Olympic Park.

Located in what is now a rundown section of downtown Atlanta between Georgia Tech and the Georgia World Congress Center, the park will be an international showpiece where thousands of visitors can mingle, watch the Games on huge video screens, buy souvenirs and eat.

Defending champion AC Milan, hoping to tie Real Madrid’s record of six Champions Cup triumphs, rebounded from its upset loss to Ajax Amsterdam by overpowering Casino Salzburg, 3-0. . . . The International Amateur Athletic Federation defended its two-year suspension of sprinter Katrin Krabbe and said it would fight the German sprinter’s lawsuit. . . .
