Countywide : Youths to Take Hands-On Guided Walk on Wild Side
More than 1,800 children and teen-agers--some sightless, others physically disabled or underprivileged--are expected to take part in a hands-on “Sensory Safari” Saturday designed to increase their awareness of North American and African wildlife.
The free event will be from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. in Featherly Regional Park, at the Riverside Freeway and Gypsum Canyon Road, in Anaheim.
Members of the Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts and other youth agencies will act as guides for the “safari,” during which participants will be allowed to touch museum-quality animal exhibits. The county Environmental Management Agency, the state Fish and Game Department, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Department and a taxidermist from Fullerton will provide the exhibits.
There will also be a hayride at this second annual event, plus souvenirs, a lunch and appearances by Disney characters.
The Southern California chapters of Safari Club International--a nonprofit organization dedicated to wildlife conservation and preserving the sport of hunting--is sponsoring the program. Retinitis Pigmentosa International and the Lions Club are also involved.
