THE GOVERNOR’S RACE

* What Happened Friday: There will be no debates between the candidates for governor this year, spokesmen for both campaigns said. Earlier in the day, Gov. Pete Wilson’s campaign said that Wilson would agree to only one debate with Kathleen Brown and that it must be Oct. 14 at public television station KVIE in Sacramento. The Brown campaign rejected the offer. Each side blamed the other for the breakdown of negotiations, which had lasted more than two months. Brown held a town hall-style rally at a downtown Sacramento shopping mall at which she fielded questions from the audience on the economy, education and the state’s fiscal problems.

* What’s Ahead: Neither Brown nor Wilson has any public events scheduled for today.

THE SENATE RACE

* What Happened Friday: Supporters of Sen. Dianne Feinstein held news conferences in Los Angeles, Sacramento, San Francisco, Fresno, San Jose and Redding to criticize a new television commercial from Republican challenger Mike Huffington. The ad charges that Feinstein has supported lenient judges for the federal bench. Both candidates were in Washington.

What’s Ahead: Both candidates will remain in Washington today, where Congress is in session.
