San Clemente’s Parks Upset in Wheelchair Tennis
IRVINE — Tenth-seeded Jim Black of Oceanside upset sixth-seeded Brad Parks of San Clemente to advance Thursday in the men’s Open Division of the U.S. Open of Wheelchair Tennis at the Racquet Club of Irvine.
Black beat Parks, 6-4, 6-3, in third-round play. Also advancing were second-seeded Randy Snow of Heath, Tex., fourth-seeded Mick Connell of Australia and eighth-seeded Scott Douglas of Penham, Ala.
In women’s Open Division third-round play, top-seeded Chantal Vandienenconck of the Netherlands easily defeated Hope Lewellen of Palos Park, Ill., 6-0, 6-0, to advance.
Competition continues today, including top-seeded Laurent Giammartini of France facing 1992 U.S. Open champion Steve Welch in quarterfinals of the men’s open.
