The Amateur Athletic Foundation has awarded $382,048 in grants to 11 Southern California organizations devoted to bringing sports opportunities to area youngsters.
The New Alternatives for Drug and Gang Elimination Youth Development Program, or New ADAGE, of Los Angeles received $187,450.
Ten other programs in areas extending from San Diego to Santa Barbara counties received grants ranging from $3,200 to $82,800.
New ADAGE will expand its organized sports programs and competitions in basketball, softball and flag football from 12 to 15 junior high and middle school campuses in the Los Angeles inner city area, said Amateur Athletic Foundation spokesman Barry Zepal. Almost all the rest of the money will go toward sports equipment.
The Amateur Athletic Foundation is endowed with Southern California’s share of a surplus in funds from the 1984 Olympic Games. It has invested more than $60 million since its inception to provide sports for youngsters, Zepal said.
