Ducks’ Carnback Will Probably Play in Sweden During Lockout

Mighty Duck forward Patrik Carnback will play for Frolunda, his former Swedish professional team, “unless something dramatic happens (in the NHL lockout situation),” his agent said Monday.

Neil Abbott, Carnback’s Boston-based agent, hoped to have the Ducks assign Carnback to Frolunda, his team for six seasons before coming to North America.

Chances of that were slim, according to Duck General Manager Jack Ferreira, who last week said:

“He can do what he wants, but I’m not going to assign him there. I don’t think there is any way to stop him. But certainly he’s violating his contract. If he were to get hurt, we wouldn’t be responsible.”

Carnback had 23 points (12 goals, 11 assists) for the Ducks last season and played for Sweden in the World Championships last spring.

“The kid is in his option year,” Abbott said. “He’s not in a solid position. The risk is obviously greater long-term if he doesn’t play.

“I think at this point there’s no reason not to (play in Sweden). Call me a pessimist, but I believe we’re not going to have an NHL season in any recognizable form.”
