Jonathan Beauregard was released from jail early Tuesday morning after posting $100,000 bail, and hours later the Cal State Northridge football player attended a team practice.

The 22-year-old lineman had been in custody at the West Valley Detention Center in Rancho Cucamonga since his arraignment last Wednesday in San Bernardino County Municipal Court.

Beauregard, a two-year starter at offensive guard, is charged with two counts of attempted murder. He has pleaded not guilty.

“He is here and in practice and still on the team,” Northridge Coach Bob Burt said. “His status has not changed. His practice today was nothing out of the ordinary.”

Beauregard was never suspended from the football team, but he missed three weeks of practice and two games because of a spiral fracture he suffered in practice on Oct. 4. On Tuesday he practiced with the middle fingers of his right hand taped.

Northridge officials allowed Beauregard to remain on the team, stating that students accused of criminal behavior are presumed innocent until proven otherwise. Beauregard originally hid his arrest from coaches and teammates.

Because Beauregard had been sidelined with an injury, he hasn’t lost his starting spot. He has plenty of time to recover, however. Northridge (3-4) is idle this week and next plays Southern Utah in Cedar City, Utah, on Nov. 5.

Despite spending the past six days behind bars, Beauregard cruised through wind sprints and blocking drills.

“I was in pretty good shape before,” he said. “I’m all right.”

Beauregard said he planned to spend his time after practice Tuesday catching up on his schoolwork. He intends to return to class today.

Beauregard is accused of shooting his former girlfriend and her male acquaintance outside a San Bernardino bar on Aug. 29.

One provision of his bail is that he have no contact with either of the victims.

George Ashwoot of Greenwood Bail Bonds in San Bernardino confirmed that his company provided Beauregard’s bond but would not give details of how it was paid.

“Yes, I posted the bond myself, but it’s confidential how he came up with the money,” Ashwoot said.

San Bernardino Deputy Dist. Atty. Dwight Moore seemed surprised Tuesday afternoon to hear Beauregard was out of jail.

“That’s an awful lot of money for a student to come up with,” Moore said. “It’s a substantial amount, but obviously there’s some money in the family.”

Beauregard’s attorney, Grover L. Porter, did not return calls.

A hearing in which attorneys may discuss a plea bargain is set for Nov. 4. At that time a preliminary hearing date may also be set.
