SAN FERNANDO : Mentor Day for Students Set Nov. 17
Eighty San Fernando High School students will spend a day with area business leaders next month under a program sponsored by the school’s Business Academy and the San Fernando Chamber of Commerce.
The second annual Mentor Day will be held Nov. 17 as part of American Enterprise Week.
Members of the local business community are being sought to host students eager to be exposed to the business world and to learn about what it takes to succeed.
The students will spend the day with the professionals to learn first-hand about the challenges and realities of the workplace.
Mentors have volunteered from about eight companies so far, including SAMCO Corp., which manufactures medical pipettes and First Interstate Bank, said Arlene Rosenblatt, instructor at the school’s Business Academy.
“Those eight companies can only accommodate about 16 to 20 students, so we need quite a few additional mentors,” Rosenblatt said.
The school’s Business Academy students are preparing for a range of careers including accounting, personnel, administration and international business.
Mentor Day begins at 8 a.m. The mentors will meet and pick up their students at the campus in the morning. The day will wrap up with an on-campus meeting at 2:30 p.m.
Several students who participated in the program last year obtained jobs working for the companies they visited, Rosenblatt, said.
Companies interested in participating in the program should contact the San Fernando Chamber of Commerce at (818) 361-1184 or Arlene Rosenblatt at (818) 365-1121.
